Founder and Cofounder, Patronage of the Foundation

The Digital Opportunities Foundation started its work in February 2002. Founders are the University of Bremen and AOL Germany. Cofounders are the management- and technology provider Accenture, the Herbert Burda Foundation, Prof. Dr. Herbert Kubicek and the E-Plus-Group (a member of the Telefónica Germany Group since October 2014).

The Foundation emerged from the activities of the Network Digital Opportunities, a project at the University of Bremen which was funded by the then Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Technology from March 2001 to January 2002 as part of the Initiative "Internet für Alle" (Internet for Everyone). Prof. Dr. Herbet Kubicek initiated the project. He has been researching the impact of modern information and communication technology on society for many years.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy as well as the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth are patrons of the foundation and support its work.
